The California-Pacific Conference announces a search for a Benefits Manager. The Benefits Manager is involved with most aspects of benefits administration for the Conference, including the churches, clergy and Conference staff. The person in this role will also support the Commission on Equitable Compensation on standards relating to clergy compensation. This includes researching, providing information, database administration, coordinating events and training, and maintaining records.

Essential Functions:

  • Assist participants with interpreting the provisions of the retirement, welfare and health benefits programs, explaining costs and enrollment procedures, processing claims. 
  • Maintain clergy and lay Conference staff retirement and welfare benefits enrollment records and participation information with Wespath Benefits and Investments.
  • Serve as a resource for contract negotiations during the annual active health plan renewal process and coordinate the semi-annual open enrollment process for active health plan participants with the contracted broker.
  • Collect health insurance eligibility information from local churches and from HR management and processes through the online enrollment system.
  • Set up new participants and maintain the billing system for retirement, welfare and health insurance participation.
  • Reconcile billing, payments and enrollment responding to discrepancies and making monthly adjustments for retirement, welfare and health insurance plans.
  • Provide Wespath and the Medicare marketplace administrator (Via Benefits) with information about Health Reimbursement Account (HRA) eligibility for retiree participants.
  • Give presentations to various groups of participants regarding benefits, such as district training workshops, retirement workshops, retiree groups and new clergy events.
  • Coordinate all procedures connected with the passing of Conference clergy, spouses and surviving spouses, including but not limited to providing information to families of the deceased, coordinating Conference announcements, processing death benefit claims, maintaining contact with families and gathering information for and compiling a memorial booklet for Annual Conference, and ordering Conference memorial gifts.
  • Coordinate the annual Equitable Compensation application process, maintain records, provide information to the Commission on Equitable Compensation and schedule the annual application review meeting.
  • Coordinate the financial assistance process for the Board of Pension and Health Benefits, giving out applications, disseminating the applications to the executive committee of the board, communicating decisions and setting up the payment of assistance.
  • Coordinate the annual pre-retirement workshop retreat, including securing presenters, publicity, meeting arrangements, registration and on-site assistance with participants during the seminar(s).
  • Coordinate the meetings of the Board of Pension and Health Benefits and various sub-committees as they are formed. 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Five years’ experience benefits administration in the non-profit environment.
  • Experience in human resources, pension, and welfare benefits administration, billing and/or accounting.
  • Must be detail oriented and possess a strong propensity for accuracy.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use basic math.
  • Must be organized and able to prioritize tasks for maximum efficiency.
  • Able to use appropriate communication skills in person, and via phone/fax/email.
  • Experience and proficiency with word processing and spreadsheet software.
  • Experience and proficiency with a data management system such as Benefits Access Database.
  • Demonstrated ability to compose letters and other correspondence and promotional material using correct grammar, spelling and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of the structure of the United Methodist Church.

Salary Range: $72,000 - $88,000
